    edge to deter thieves from shaving the edge of every gold or silver coin
    that passed through their hands and prevent counterfeiting. This way, if a
    vendor sees the reeding is shaved or missing, they would refuse to accept
    the coin as payment. Nowadays, the mint adds the reeding for aesthetics,
    since precious metal coins are no longer circulated.
