Let's unbox a group of ancient coins that I was recently offered from a dealer friend that I know – I thought that we got some GREAT results! I'll aim to hold onto a few of these, and it is pretty crazy to think that these copper coins could be considered hyperinflationary, especially given their size, but the matter of fact is that they were replacing (and enforced by the law) the silver denarii and other money materials that would have been circulating at the time. However, their state of preservation – or at least the amount of detail left – on them is quite incredible. Let me know what you think – how did I end up doing?

Yay more ancient coins!
What kind of knife do you have
Nice purchase. Hmm…this sand patina everywhere. Try to get a second opinion if these coins are genuine. There are some “specialists” e.g. in the Istanbul bazar who are counterfeiting even these quite common late Roman coins. Just my two cents. Greets from GER, U.
Thanks Uwe! Was able to do some additional research – felt confident about these coins & their source. A backend wing of a large ancient coin importer in the US. But I agree – important to be discerning with what we are buying!
You need to study what the abbreviations in the legend mean!!! You’re better than you were but you got several wrong.
Agreed – this video was filmed ~4 months ago though – I think I’m better today!
@Treasure Town I look forward to more. You have entered what I think is the most exciting and fulfilling part of numismatics.
it’s nice to see some more ancient coins on the channel. the XXI in the exergue simply refers to how much silver is in it, which is a 20:1 ratio of bronze to silver. nice Probus too, he’s got in my opinion the most variety on his coins; love his quadriga reverses
at 5:00 it is a Constantine (CONSTANTINVS), and the P F represents Pius Felix. that’s a cool piece because it features a pagan reverse (IOVI CONSERVATORI Jupiter the Protector) from Constantine as Caesar under the Tetrarchy. CCV in the Diocletian is an abbreviation of Caesar Caius Valerius DIOCLETIANVS and I think it’s a half follis I’m not too sure. in the Byzantine era, I think 6000 nummi makes a solidus
great video Christian!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
@Treasure Town anytime!
@Ethan Li Do you have expertise in ancient coin IDing? If so, feel free to shoot me an email through my website’s contact page – would be interested in speaking more about possible collabs / business opportunity.
When it comes to ancients, I’m just a sucker for the pretty stuff, so pre 3rd Century Crisis coins for Rome and any type of Greek. Really, anything past the 3rd century for me is just way too unappealing in terms of the artistry, and a lot of it is just super common stuff.
Those Roman coins are really cool
thank you

Fascinating. Just to think what was happening in the world when these ancient coins were being used.
